Whilst competing as a professional Triathlete and as an avid cyclist, Nigel (AKA ‘Mr Bike’) used to regularly have his road bike serviced by what was once ‘Dr Bike’ on the outskirts of Newark. By chance one fateful day, Nigel heard that the bike shop was due to close down and the great location was going to be rented out as office spaces. After much deliberation Nigel decided to take over the building and setup an updated version of the business and established what we now know as ‘Mr Bike’.
Nigel’s vision was simple, to create a cycling hub which would offer everything any cyclist would need all under one roof. He decided to specialise in second-hand bikes and created the innovative concept of allowing bike trade-ins which would allow people to sell their old bikes for either cash or as credit for their next bike in-store. In addition he hired a specialist team of mechanics who immediately set to work fixing every type of bike the people of Newark had to offer! Soon the ‘bike wash’ was introduced which proved extremely popular with local cyclists who wanted a simple bike wash service and it also helped the mechanics with servicing and repairs – a lot can go wrong when a bike is dirty!
The social aspect of cycling was also important to Nigel and so he started the infamous Newark Ride-Outs every Wednesday and Sunday which allowed local cycling enthusiasts to get together and socialise with like-minded individuals and gain a bit of fitness at the same time, whilst also getting a free drink of coffee and slice of cake.
Over time Mr Bike has grown into the cycling hub that Nigel envisaged and continues to grow with services on offer for every local cycling need.
